Education: Using Zoo InternQuest in the Classroom
Interns create online journals about their experiences in the Zoo computer lab.
Teachers in California might want to see how participation in the InternQuest Web site supports goals found in the Science Framework.
Virtual interns
Individual students or whole classrooms anywhere in the world can participate in InternQuest through the Internet as "Virtual Interns." Individuals may follow our Interns' experiences through their journals. You will be able to see the schedule of presentations in advance and e-mail questions for the Interns to relay to Zoo experts. Check back after the presentation for answers, and participate in a discussion of the week's topics with the Interns here at the Zoo!
Individuals who want to participate should follow the instructions for participating as a virtual intern on the participate page. Registered participants who complete the semester will receive a certificate of completion they can view online, or print out to frame and hang at home or school!
Activities to enhance student participation
Individual students or classes can integrate what they learn from the InternQuest journals and participating in the forum discussions into other classroom and research activities.
Zoo InternQuest is a great starting point for technology-based research and learning on such related topics as conservation, animal welfare, pathology, or animal-related careers. Students can proceed to use online, classroom, and library resources to create hotlists, Web pages, WebQuests or multimedia presentations on these and other topics and share them with other online students. You can use the Participants Forum to invite other Zoo InternQuest Virtual Interns to participate in your activities. This Web site has plenty of resources to begin your research.
Classes or afterschool clubs that have access to ISDN-based videoconferencing may have the opportunity to meet with some of the Zoo staff through an interactive video teleconference to share part of the internship experience! Teachers who would like to make arrangements for their class to participate should contact the program coordinator below as early as possible.
